Mozilla now holds the Guinness World Record for the most downloaded software within 24 hours. On the Mozilla Firefox 3 launch day, from 18:16 UTC on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 UTC on June 18, 2008 the browser software was downloaded 8,002,530 times as recorded by Guinness - thus official declaring it a world record.

ff 3.0 is a nice browser no doubt. Anybody remember how much ff 2.0 was downloaded on the release day?

I don't even like the browser but 8mil in one day is quite impressive.

Oh, WoW should count their patches as world records, I'm sure it would stomp Firefox 3.0.

Well, WOW already has it's own record for "most people deprived of social life" :P
I'm glad that Mozilla pulled this off and I'm glad I downloaded it the first day.
Hooray for Firefox!

Isn't this just, or primarily because the "auto-update" feature of Firefox?
by btarunr (July 3rd - 7:49 AM) - Reply
On download day, Firefox 2 never prompted me to update or download the update by itself. Firefox only auto-downloads patches, major updates are always prompted to the user.

FF2 to FF3 isn't and update, it's an upgrade. It's not like XP has Vista in Windows Update either :)

I seem to remember reading that only full downloads from the Firefox website would be counted, not automatic updates

This benchmark needs to be stopped. Too easy to have "machine" downloads, part-downloads, cancelled downloads, repeat downloads, as well as auto-updates, being counted in the download statistics.

UNLESS this figure can be validated by their new "dial-home spyware", that there are 8 million functional installs, then its all PR spin to me.

HOLY MOTHER OF MERCY! That's loads of people. I did it three times, one for each computer in the house.

newtekie1 must be like "OMFG you idiots just downloaded the most virulent piece of spyware ever. Your lives are about to come to a screeching halt as your usage statistics get sent to Mozilla servers." :slap:

IIRC, there was a special "Download Day" only download. Auto-update doesn't install upgrades, so there's no need to worry about that. Partial, cancelled, and repeat downloads though could or could not have been counted. I'm not that worried about it though. There's more than 8 million FF users, so even if the data might be skewed from bad downloads it still shows there's a definite interest.

Anyway, 8 million is ridiculous! Bad downloads or not, that's pretty impressive. :toast:
I'm pretty sure getting a 'Guinness Record' is one of the purest forms of PR available lol

Yeah, the only site I have noticed problems with Opera 9.5 with was my Uni's site, had it not been for that, Firefox would not be installed at the moment.

I love Opera dearly :D

IIRC, Firefox 2.0 got around 1.6 million downloads on its first day.

imo, ff3 isnt that good. well, its mostly the auto-search-bookmark feature. (is there a way to turn it off?)
